Magnetic resonance

Magnetic resonance is a physical phenomenon in which certain atomic nuclei respond to external magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy. This principle is used in technologies like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In MRI, strong magnetic fields and radio waves interact with hydrogen atoms in the body, allowing the machine to create detailed images of soft tissues like the brain, muscles, and organs—without using harmful radiation. It’s a widely used, non-invasive medical tool that helps diagnose various conditions, from torn ligaments to brain tumors.

NMR spectroscopy, on the other hand, applies the same magnetic principles to study the structure of molecules in chemistry and biochemistry. It is often used in research to identify unknown compounds, analyze mixtures, or understand the behavior of complex molecules like proteins. While both MRI and NMR rely on how atomic nuclei react within a magnetic field, MRI is focused on imaging the human body, whereas NMR is primarily used for scientific and industrial analysis.
