I'm curious, is there much call for any sort of medieval-themed garb/weaponry in cosplay, in general?

Of course. I was just reading a question from someone doing a Game of Thrones build. Foam armor is one of the mainstays even if it's more fantasy or some kind of fusion. Medieval is one of the subgenres for steampunk. There is plenty of room for that kind of stuff and opportunities to get double use from those renaissance faire boots.
