Umm.. Help with a Sonic costume? (Be afraid, be VERY afraid)

Alright, I have to make a Sonic the Hedgehog costume for my friend, and I have NO idea how to make the head. I don't know if I should attempt to make a big mascot head(pfft, I'm a n00b, I'd probably die.) or if I should some how try to make just spikes to go on my friend's head. Even if I tried making spikes out of cardboard, I know that 1. I wouldn't be able to get them to stick to anyone's head and 2. They'd just flop around. Little help?
Oh my gawsh.

I'd make a skullcap out of blue spandex with florists foam cones in it for the spikes. It wouldn't take much abuse, but it'd be a quick and easy fix.

hmm... to go off of darktiger's suggestion- try looking at Cosplaylab.com- Gary (Prof.) does some interesting things like that- take a look at his Yoh 'wig'. It's really interesting.
no leap in logic is too extreme... for RAGE!
