when I started out sewing cosplay costumes ( I had been sewing since I was 10) I would just look thru the pattern books, like all the way thru and find patterns even if they only had one piece of the costume and piece them together. Try Joanne's when they have patterns on sale for 99 cents or 1.99. You really just have to experiment, try to make your costume with like the 99cent a yard cotton, just to make sure it will work and when you find it does then use the expensive pretty fabrics. Really for me it was all experimintation till I got better and it is still experimintation, and I have been sewing for 16 years, cosplaying for 7.

What wings suggested is really good also as far as learning techniques and things like that see if there is a local theatre company in your area with a working costume shop. Usually if there is they love volunteers. You'll start out doing grunt work typically but they'll throw you some pointers and help you on machines

Also, if you're still in school, you may be able to take a class on sewing if they have it where you go. At my high school we have Clothing and Advanced Clothing, both are amazing and helped me out greatly. College might have a sewing class, depending on where you're going and what you're majoring in. If you're still in middle school, they have home ec or whatever it's called now, and they have sewing. You make pillows and little bags, but it gets the jist of sewing across.

A theater company is great, again, if you're in school and it's not too late into the year yet, you could join on and help with the drama clubs costuming. I did this year, it was fun stuff. The woman I worked with were nice.

Since you're new to sewing, I'm gonna take a step onto a limb and assume that you don't know the difference between needles depending on the fabric. I don't really either, just the basic few, other than that I ask one of the employees at Jo-Ann's. Normally they're right on the ball, sometimes the back of the pattern tells you what to use too. In the notions space.

Well, I wish you the best of luck and hope your costumes turn out great! Just remember what WINGS said, experiment. Practice. I started out on old clothing I no longer fit or were ripped, torn, mangled (whatever.) Old towels can work too, for this stage of pratice, but I'm not entirely recommending it. Old clothing is better, preferably cotton shirts since that is what your main fabric in life is. *nods*

Good luck!
