About this Costume

I opted for a woven fabric rather than a knit since I figured, while a knit would lay smoother on my body, the bias tape around the edges would be ripply and gross. Thus, I'm sacrificing some smoothness in the body of the outfit for overall cleanliness of construction. I hand-drafted the dress pattern by pinning both on my new dressform and on my own body, inserting darts under the bust and above the butt in the back so it would be flattering. I finished the entire thing in bias tape, then put in machine-sewn buttonholes and hand-attached buttons. The jacket is a find from 2006, when I first started showing interest in cosplay, which came in handy for this costume. I fashioned the metal bracelets and the metal sleeve cuffs out of craft foam and googly eyes. I used a length of black leather strap for her necklace. I made the hairbow out of stretch twill, which holds its shape very well without interfacing. I made the staff by using craft foam to "plug" the gap between an old color guard flagpole I had from high school, and some slightly wider diameter mailing tubes and PVC joints. I sprayed and distressed the whole thing in my basement. I cut the bangs on the wig to be a bit more natural and like the Advent Children incarnation of Aerith and held in place with a butt-ton of hairspray and bobby pins.
