About this Costume
Construction Details:
Starting with the dress, I made the pattern for it from scratch (I also made my own patterns for the armwarmers, hat, cape, and collar) and focused on making sure it would be flattering to my figure. The white detailing that you see on my dress is entirely zig-zagged stitched. I pleated the ends of the armwarmers and attached it to the base and added pleather circles (I thought that textured circles would look better than regular black circles would.) I drew the wings on a piece of paper and used that as my cape pattern. The cape is sewn into the dress so it doesn't move. For the hat, I cut out two very large circles and cut a hole for my head in one of them, sewed on the gold designs on the hat first, then sewed it all together and stuffed it with PolyFil. It stays on my head very well even without bobby pins or hair clips. I made my own tassel by gluing matching yarn into a wooden sphere with a hole in it that then attached to another wooden circle that I painted silver. The shorts have elastic in the waist and in the legs. I sewed black lace and gold bias tape onto stockings and keep them held up with a garter belt. Not seen in the picture but for the shoes my friend Andy helped me the night before the con by painting a pair of black heeled shoes white and gold. I bought the wig from Circus Doll on Storenvy and cut it, flat ironed the ends out on the lowest heat setting, and used hairspray to keep it in place!
