About this Costume
Construction Details:
Tunic: Made out of a black "mystery jersey" found randomly at Joann's. While very pretty, it was surprisingly difficult to sew with and it snags easily. I modified a preexisting shirt pattern by lengthening the sleeves so they resembled wizard ones, and by cutting the shirt ends into the triangle shape. I differed slightly from canon by gluing on white braid along the shirt hem and cuffs, as well as stitching on black lace along the cuffs. The most time consuming part was by far the Space symbol, where I individually glued on tiny rhinestones. That alone was over ten hours of work. rnrnSkirt: A very basic gathered skirt made out of two rectangular pieces! The material however is AWESOME-it is actually made out of gray travel knit from Hobby Lobby. It has a nice stretch, easy to work with, and it does not wrinkle at all! I added more black lace to the hem, a strip of black bias tape, and another rhinestone pattern! rnrnHood: The hood was the hardest part of the costume for me. Patterning does not come easy for me at all, so it definitely took some effort. I found a tutorial online to make a God Tier John, and I changed the "mantle" and hood shapes to suit Jade. Sewing everything up however was quite easy. On top of the hood itself I cut in two slits for Jade’s dog ears, and then hand sewed the tabs and buttons in front of them. The tabs aren’t functional, but they get the look right. C: I discovered what really “made” the look of Jade’s hood was tapering in the area between the two tails. This really helped to define the two shapes and not make it look so bulky. =Prnrn
Ears: Only had to cut out triangular shapes in white fake fur and sandwich pipe cleaner in between! They were originally glued onto a pair of hair clips, but I found that the force of my hood riding up against them caused my wig to push back. :C Right now they are on a headband that I wear under my hood that doesn’t cause that problem.rnrnStockings: Just a pair of striped stockings purchased from We Love Colors! They aren’t worth the price.rnrnShoes: A pair of “ruby slippers” from Amazon. =P Even though Jade wears a pair of flats in the comic, I thought that heels would be more elegant and pretty instead. They are extremely painful to wear all day at a con, but they’re entirely worth it!! I just keep a comfier pair of shoes to keep with me to change into.rnrn
Glasses: Retro round glasses from Ebay!rn
Personal Thoughts:
I LOVE JADE! She is my absolute favorite character in Homestuck, so it's an always an honor cosplaying her. She is probably the character I feel the most confident about portraying as well. However, I do making a new up a top due to a glue stain and the rhinestones that keep constantly falling off.rnI have worn this costume to three different conventions, but the magic of it has not worn out. This costume is such a treat to wear, but I am excited to make other outfits of Jade's.rn

Wig Review
While Arda does carry some awesome wigs, I am wary of purchasing another long haired wig from them again. This wig tangles like there is no tomorrow, and I am not sure if it's worth the upkeep at this point.
