About this Costume
- Construction Details:
I decided to modify the design a little, because I find PB's dress to be rather unflattering in cut- that high collar and waistline often don't translate well to real life. I dipped the collar bow and brought the sash up to an empire waist. I also expanded the size of the sleeve puffs and maintained the basic silhouette of the dress, although I made it a bit wider. I didn't want to make it any wider than that- PB is a practical character, and aside from really formal events (tart dress!) she's never shown in anything she wouldn't be able to move around easily in.
I used silk dupioni for both the purple and pink parts, and added lace I hand-dyed to match and crystal gemstone beads for accents here and there to give it a more princessy flair. I spent quite a long time on the crown- I wanted a 3-dimensional crown that would match the extra details I was giving the dress, rather than resort to cardstock or craft foam as I see many others do.
I also took great caution in matching the colors correctly. PB's skin is a very pale pink whereas her hair is much, much darker- almost fuchsia. I've seen a lot of people in pastel pink wigs and whatnot for PB, but it looks a little strange to me. I wanted to maintain the canon contrast between her skin and her hair.
Overall, I'm more than pleased with the results of this costume. I'm working on her What Was Missing outfit next!
- Personal Thoughts:
- I really, really love cosplaying PB. she’s the character I would have loved to see in a cartoon when I was a kid- a pretty pink princess who likes being pretty and pink but who also likes science and math and expanding her knowledge on all kinds of subjects. a princess who’s not always the damsel in distress! and yet she’s got a ton of respectable flaws, too. PB is a really great character. this is the first cosplay I’ve made for her- I decided to go with her default- but it certainly won’t be the last.
