About this Costume
- Construction Details:
- Sparkle Pipsi made an awesome tutorial that's posted on her deviantART which was very easy to follow! Without it, I don't think I would have been able to attempt making this, as it's saved me a lot of time and frustration instead of trying to figure it out on my own. I decided to go with darker/deeper red and purple colors to better match the patent leather shoes and official earrings I purchased last year. I had to tweak adjustments for some of the pieces, but aside from that I followed the tutorial step by step. The gloves aren't my best construction-wise, so they'll be replaced when I finally feel like tackling gusseted gloves, haha (I'm really not looking forward to hand sewing them...). The brass tiara was purchased from Catzia's Collectibles, and currently the broach is the only accessory missing from my costume.
- Personal Thoughts:
- When I was about 10 or 11, my mom made a Sailor Mars costume for me using the infamous McCall's pattern. Mercury was my favorite at the time, but I had long hair so it made more sense for me to go as Mars, plus what the hell did I know about wigs back then?! Or make up, fittings, or anything cosplay related really, haha! Anyway, while sorting through some stuff in the garage one day, I found this gem, and well, here we are. 8D This also marks my uh, fourth costume within the past year involving sailor collars and pleated skirts... yeah.
- Styling Notes
- I used my flat iron to straighten the wig WHICH TOOK FOREVER because of all the curls and waves. I trimmed the bangs using sharp mini scissors and thinning shears, then used my flat iron and hair rollers to help volumize the bangs.
- Wig Review
- I fell in love with Epic's Purple Black Mix color, it's absolutely gorgeous in person and photos don't do it justice. This is the perfect color for Sailor Mars IMHO.
