About this Costume
Construction Details:
Completed March 2012 This was a very basic costume. I went for an 80s look, since that's when the original NES Metroid came out, and wanted to look a bit spacey so I used a metallic fabric (that and I admit I love metallic spandex and other fabulous fabrics, probably more than is healthy or normal). The bodysuit and boot covers are a 4-way stretch metallic spandex, I modified a KwikSew pattern for the bodysuit and the pattern for the boots was obviously custom so they would conform. The wig is a Ferrari from Arda in Mako Green with some light styling to fluff up and trim the bangs. The hand cannon was a heavily modified toy cannon with a lot of parts taken off by hand or dremel and readjusted, with a few additions as well to keep it in place, then painted a dark metallic green to match some of the contrasting pieces. Since it is based off of a sprite, I didn't have to go for any specific look, so it helped in creating a unique piece.
Personal Thoughts:
I adore the retro Metroid games, namely the original title for the NES and Super Metroid. I still remember being a little girl and watching my brother play the original game and seeing the ending, I was so blown away that the hero of the story was in fact a woman. Back then it was unheard of. Thus Samus became something special to me, and of course is iconic in the gaming world for this very reason, as well. Her Zero Suit is done often, and I don't think I could pull that off well at all, so I went with this version not just for the nostalgia. It took me years to get the confidence to even make the Justin Bailey version since I don't feel worthy, but I'm also older now and feel a bit more comfortable with more mature characters at this point in time. Oh, and I obviously used forms to enhance my bust, haha.
